Tanja Ostojić: Women’s Health/Body Politics

9.10 – 5.11.2025

Solo exhibition

Menjačnica Gallery of Goethe-Institut Belgrad

Knez-Mihailova Str. 50, Belgrade, Serbia.

Tanja Ostojić’s exhibition Women’s Health/Body Politics at the Gallery Menjačnica presents works that reflect the female transition in menopause, a selection from a recent production presented at the larger thematic exhibition Women’s Health, Body Politics, Labour, Sexuality, Wellbeing, Menopause, Ageing and Agency in the Contemporary Art Gallery Subotica during 2024.

Within the scope of this intimate exhibition Tanje Ostojić deals with sensitive, and often silenced topics in our society, including middle age challenges for women and the processes of change. Departing from the point that the conditions of a woman’s body, and the attitude towards her own health, sexuality and life roles, depend on the attitude built towards them by the woman herself, as well as by society as a whole, Tanja Ostojić formulates this central question as a political one in the exhibition. The goal of the exhibition is to raise awareness among women who are directly affected by these processes, as well as the wider audience, in the direction of sharing women’s knowledge concerning politics of care and repair, physical and mental wellbeing.

CHANGED BY WATER

Workshop with Tanja Ostojić

Saturday, June 28, 2025,

a day-long workshop at Groß Glienicker See and Sacrower See.

The workshop with a focus on urban swimming cultures, and Berlin waters will explore lakes on the North side of Berlin, at the border with Potsdam. Join us for a swim at the historical Berlin-Wall route and in the nature reserve of ‘Sacrower See and Königswald’.

The workshop will include biking and swimming activities. It will NOT include the moderated sharing circle on menopause. Participants are anyhow welcome to update and share in small groups during the breaks if desired.

  Groß Glienicker See

– The border between Berlin and Potsdam runs right through the centre of Groß Glienicker See, and during the Cold War it was the border between the East and the West. On the East side, belonging to Kladow, the village was called Groß Glienicke (without a hyphen), on the West side, belonging to West Berlin, Groß-Glienicke (with a hyphen).

– Between 1961 and 1989, access to the lake was not possible on the East side and was blocked by the Wall. On the West side, West-Berliners could swim till the middle of the lake, right up to the zone of the border.

– The Groß Glienicker See, one of the clearest lakes in Berlin, is chalk-rich, fed by groundwater, 2 km long, 530 m wide, and 11.25 metres deep at its deepest point.

– On the North side is the Wall memorial with remains of the original parts of the Berlin Wall.

 Sacrower See

–  We plan as well to explore the nearby Sacrower See, the chalk-rich lake that lies entirely within the ‘Sacrower See and Königswald’ nature reserve. Together with the Seeburger Fenn and the Groß Glienicker See, it forms a chain of lakes that lies in a glacial channel, which also includes the Heilige See further in the South.

-The workshop will offer options for participants who wish to swim longer distance as well as for ones who prefer to hang out on a beach/ and or bike to the historical Berlin-Wall remains.

– Participation in the workshop is free of charge, registration obligatory. If you would like to join us, please send me an email with short motivation and your contact details, and to receive further information to TanjaOstojicArt@Gmail.com

The ongoing research project by Tanja Ostojić “Changed by Water”, on menopause, urban swimming cultures, collective women’s knowledge and agency has been kindly supported by the Gwaertler Stiftung.

CHANGED BY WATER: THE MENOPAUSAL PARTY

Workshop with Tanja Ostojić

The workshop for Women combines swimming practice with conversations, gathering and transmission of knowledges around swimming cultures as healing for (pre)menopause, and around the feminist approach to menopause. The workshop is in English. Participation is free of charge, number of places limited, registration obligatory. Please send an email message in case you feel highly motivated to join/need further information, as there might still be a few spots available).

In times of planetary extractivism, feminist thinking has shown that theory and practice of transformation are intertwined and possible, since “All that you touch You Change. All that you Change, Changes you. The only lasting truth is Change.” — (Octavia E. Butler: Parable of the Sower,1993.) As part of the many women struggling with feelings of isolation and menopause, and as a feminist, I embraced the changes in my body as politics. Through artistic research, I am working to map out strategies to touch and change through bodies of water, and through women’s collective knowledges.

The ongoing research project by Tanja Ostojić “Changed by Water”, on menopause, urban swimming cultures, collective women knowledge and agency has been kindly supported by the Gwaertler Stiftung. The workshop has been realized in cooperation with the Strandbad Tegelsee, Zentrum für Kultur und Erholung.
